Hi Pauline
Thanks for the details; it would appear John and siblings were fatherless from a young age.

Hi Mabel
That's brilliant; they moved around a bit; any chance you could find them on the 1871.  I found son Thomas in 1891 in New Tredegar.

Hi Mabel

Yes, he did become a farmer, he also carried out contact work, had a building business in New Tredegar.  I located him in 1881 @ Gellyhir, Llanfabon.  He moved there after his marriage to Martha (second marriage) I'm not sure when as I've not found marriage details.
I would appreciate details of 1871.

1881@ Gellyhir, Llanfabon
John Thomas       Head   50   Farmer 110 acres employing 3 labourers, Bedwellty, Mon
Martha Thomas      Wife   36   farmer’s wife   Mynydislwyn, Mon
Evan Thomas         son   13   scholar      Llanfabon, Glam
Lewis Thomas            stepson   12   scholar   Llanfabon
Amelia Thomas          stepdaug   07   scholar   Llanfabon
David John Thomas      son           02                   Llanfabon
Daniel Jenkins Thomas    son   10m          Llanfabon

John Thomas died 1882 from a fractured skull, when he fell of his horse in Ystrad Mynach.  Martha died 1884, after which the two boys David John Thomas and Daniel Jenkins Thomas went to live with John's brother Thomas Thomas in New Tredegar.  I've yet to find out what happened with Evan, Lewis and Amelia.
