William Simpson Taylor born Oct 1870 Warrington
« on: Tuesday 04 June 19 11:46 BST (UK) »
Trying to find information on my wife's great grandfather.
Shows on 1871 Census as William Simpson Taylor, living his mother Mary Taylor, a lodger.
Probably Mary Taylor probably not married. I suspect the father is a Mr. Simpson.
William Simpson Taylor appears again in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census.
Hoping that information will lead to info on my wife's Grandfather, William Taylor born 1897. Can only find scant details of William the son.

You really need to start with William Taylor b 1897 and work backwards.  Where was he born, and have you found him in a census in 1901/1911 and/or the 1939 Register?  Whom did he marry - and what paternal details were given then?

The GRO indexes shows no mother’s maiden name on his birth entry - so suggests illegitimate

TAYLOR, WILLIAM  SIMPSON   -
1870  D Quarter in WARRINGTON  Volume 08C  Page 155

Is William Taylor the adopted son of Jonathan & Matilda Bollellor on 1891 c census
RG12; Piece: 3076; Folio: 113; Page: 15

Did he marry Alice?

1901 census RG13; Piece: 3580; Folio: 78; Page: 28
they have sons
William born c 1896 Warrington
Arthur born c 1898
Ada born 1894

EDIT - looking at the original 1891 census surname could be MELLOR
Jonathan Mellor
Matilda B Mellor

Baptism:
23 Oct 1870 St Paul, Warrington, Lancashire
William Taylor - son of Mary Taylor
Abode: Tanners Lane
Notes: Illegitimate
(LancsOPC)

I am not sure whats going on here as those Birth Regs have Mother as Newall.

But this seems to be the Marriage and William does not name a Father.

Marriage:
4 Mar 1893 St Paul, Warrington, Lancashire, England
William Taylor - 22, Slater, Bachelor, 18 Back Dallam Lane
Alice Whittaker - 18, Spinster, 9 Golden Grove Street
Bride's Father: Abel Whittaker, Carpenter
Witness: H. Smallman; Alice Julia Hamilton

Occp and age is correct

Trish :)

If you trace via censuses, Mary in 1861 is with her widowed father James, in Crossley Street, and is working then as a fustian cutter - as she was in 1871. In 1851 James has his wife, Ann (Roberts ) still alive.
No clues about William Simpson T's father yet, sorry. Looking round in area to see if there's a likely lad....
