There are a couple of workhouse admissions in Islington in 1869 for a Thomas Hastings age 5
Several in the mid 1900s of an elderly Harriet Hastings, a nurse.
And loads and loads for Henry Hastings (are they all the same chap?)

I've managed to find some exams in Islington
The first one relates to the Thomas who was briefly in the workhouse and school, and is dated 12.4.1869. Mother is said to be Harriet, but father not named as Henry!
Is the link going to work :-\

The second one confirms the information found by avm! As a bonus, son Thomas, 8, is mentioned!

This is gold - so much detail. Henry Hastings reports he was born 22 Dec 1826 at Winchester Row, Marylebone, son of William and Mary Hastings.

Possible death: Henry Hastings aged 57, Jun qtr 1883 Islington (did he live that long I wonder?).

Great to have the Dack theory confirmed in black and white.

Re the 1869 entry - yikes! Thomas aged 5 seems to have been left in the lurch by the Hastings - father absent, mother having being taken into the House of Correction for 6 months.

So we appear from that record to have an alias for Henry Hastings: John Burford Hastings (unless this was just a mistake by the person delivering Thomas to the workhouse, who had only known the family 6 weeks).

Re different names of father, the line of work may be similar
John Burford Hastings said to be employed by Mr Sinclair of the Marble Works, and Thomas Hastings was a Mason's Laborer.

The chaotic lifestyle may explain why they have not yet been found in 1871, which is frustrating.

Mystery also as to what became of Thomas Lewis and son William Lewis b1848.

I am not yet finding corroboration of Henry’s claimed birth details.

It’s perfectly possible that Thomas Stride’s birthday is in December.  The registration window is 6 weeks following the birth, so a December birth was often registered in January

The GRO ref in March 1864, Pancras, 1b 156
Ten names with that reference, I had a (very) quick look for baptisms and found just two!
Frederick William Mann was baptized 12 May 1864 in St Pancras. Born 14 Dec 1863
and Isabella (Isabel) Anne Strafford was baptized in July 1865, born in Dec 1863, possibly says the 13th (not very clear)

I've had no luck with the Hastings in 1871 either.

NB It’s perfectly possible that Thomas Stride’s birthday is in December.  The registration window is 6 weeks following the birth, so a December birth was often registered in January whether or not the mother was ill (and we know that Louisa was probably taken ill, though it’s always possible that she and her daughter died another way e.g. in an accident).

I just now ordered the PDF version of the GRO entry for Thomas Frederick William Stride Jan-Feb-Mar 1864 St Pancras.

I'm excited to see what it says!  (I'll have to wait about 4 business days to find out)
