This is not really an occupation but a relationship.  In the 1871 census Rg10/1281/7/116/9/43 of Berkshire County Jail I found several people listed with a relationship of Bobton (If I have read it correctly).  They have various occupations so I should think they are inmates rather than staff. 

Does anyone recognise the word?

Have you noticed how he's the first of the male 'prisoners'?
I have just trawled through the next 6 pages (what a lot of inmates!)to see if they write the word again........but no if course they flipping don't 

You need someone to clean up the enumerators blobby pen writing which looks like it's been written on blotting paper.
