I‘m looking for a marriage for Richard Pattenden and Mary. There’s one St Nicholas, Brighton 16 June 1742 Richard Pattenden and Mary Clark, widow. Both of Hailsham, Sussex.The widow Mary married, I think William Clark Wartling 30 January 1738 as Mary Mepham. The Richard Pattenden who married 1742 Mary Clark can’t be my Richard

My Richard Pattenden and Mary baptised the following children in East Grinstead,Sussex :

Thomas 22 April 1752
John 27 December 1753(my ancestor)
Thomas 28 January 1759
Henry 10 May 1761


I think the couple from the marriage above baptised their children in Hellingly,Hailsham

Catherine 11 Aug 1749
Dinah 19 June 1751
Josiah 22 March 1754
Uriah 7 June 1756
Hezekiah 30 Aug 1759
Jacob 5 October 1765

So where and when did Richard and Mary marry?

According to the Sussex Marriage Index ,Richard Pattenden,from Hailsham married Mary Clark,Widow,
at Burwash 16 June 1742.
There is no other marriage on the Index for a Richard & Mary for that year.

No marriage I’m afraid but I did note on Freereg that Jeremiah and Hannah had children in East Grinstead in the same period. I see from the baptisms below their parents were Thomas and Sarah.

Jeremiah PATTENDEN   Baptism   12 May 1729   Sussex   West Hoathly : St Margaret

Richard PATTENDEN   Baptism   26 Aug 1726   Sussex   West Hoathly : St Margaret

So Richard would only be 16 in 1742, not impossible to marry a widow but unlikely.

Mary Mepham was from Sevenoaks,Kent.

Maybe they are the Richard Pattenden & Mary Creasy who married in West Hoathly in 1762, maybe they did I not marry until after the children were born?

A daughter, Milcah Mepham Pattenden, was baptised at Chiddingly 1762, to Richard & Mary Pattenden. It would be fair to assume that this Mary is Mary Mepham/Clark.

Oh sorry the marriage was in Burwash 1742 not in Brighton Thank you!

I also thought the Richard Pattenden born 1726 in West Hoathly is a good possibility but than I saw the marriage and was confused

The marriage of Richard Pattenden and Mary Creasy is also very interesting but why a marriage in West Hoathly and not in East Grinstead where the children were baptised?

baptised 26 Aug 1716 at Hellingly,son of Thomas and Ann, from SFHG.
From SMI,30 Apr 1695 at Hailsham,Thomas Pattenden of Waldron & Ann Wren (OTP)

Yes, i think this has to be the Richard Pattenden who married Mary Clark (Mepham) and who baptised his children in Hellingly
