There are a number of interpretations of IHS - ranging from the initial letters of various Latin phrases to the first three letters of Jesus in Greek.  It is the logo of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).

Here is an attempt at the inscription - mostly guesswork!
In Memory Of
Jean Fitzgerald
Aged
........
........
Maggie
Who Departed This Life
........ 1842(?)
Aged ? Years
Michael Christopher Fitzgerald
Died ? July 1??2 might even be 1932?
Aged ? Years
............  Fitzgerald
............  Bridge
..........  1940(?)

I like the suggestions to see whether the MIs for the graveyard have been transcribed and/or to see if someone can go there and look at it in a different light ;D

Hi Anne,

Did you take the photo yourself?

The reason I ask is that I noticed the shadow cast by the stone was fairy long so I presumed it was either early morning or late afternoon. From personal experience, I've found that the angle of the sun can make a huge difference when trying to de-cypher inscriptons.

I don't believe in touching the stones in any way to try and bring up the inscriptions.

If you did take the photo and can go back easily enough, try a different time of day or even photograph the stone much closer.

Anne

Paul the area you have circled was added in 1959

Carmela you are right about the four names John Fitzgerald, Maggie, Michael Christopher Fitzgerald and James F Fitzgerald

Andrea and Anne it was my daughter that took the picture for me  :(

Jap Thanks all that ties in with the few bits of information that I have on this side of the family.

I guess I will have to go back out to the graveyard my self and take another picture at least it is not to far away from me only a bus ride

Thanks for all the help
Anne  :)

Take a cardboard tube with you of reasonable size when you go to the graveyard and view the Headstone through it at different angles.  This often helps to decipher a worn inscription. The Family History Society I was in 30 years ago did a whole graveyard this way.
