« on: Wednesday 19 June 19 17:19 BST (UK) »
Hi folk

Going back to basics.  This is from a marriage that took place in 1839 and is mentioned in 2 parish registers  Fortingall and Dull -

Is this a name of a hamlet or a farm ? John is from here in the Dull Parish it looks like Frenich

Google maps are pretty useless for finding single crofts, farms or houses, especially those that no longer exist.

Another time go to https://maps.nls.uk/
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I am trying to be as sure as I can be that I have the correct place of birth amd parents for John Stewart.

marriage 1838 took place in Dull he is from Frenich and she (Jane/Jean McGregor is from  Fortingall Parish (Autich??)

Death cert states parents as James Stewart  and Mary ms Stewart .  (Oh the joys ..... there is more than one couple with these names).  Son is the informant and his mother is alive.

Census - and where John born
1841 - Perthshire  aged 30
1851 - Fortingall , 41
1861- Rannoch 51
1871- Fortingall 61

John dies in 1877 and is given an age of 70!

The family were up in Gairloch in 1871 but before that in rural Perthshire.   Is it likely he is from Fortingall or elsewhere - there is possible baptism in Abernethy and Kincardine 1811 ?   That does not fit with census palce of birth but fine for age! Is the death cert correct  in parent details?? Is there a baptism record?  I ask that as there is not one for his wife Jane/Jean!

Thank you forfarian for the link to those maps - very interesting
