John Campbell & Fanny Campbell nee McManus
« on: Saturday 22 June 19 14:53 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone!

Whilst working on my family tree, I have hit a stumbling block.

John Campbell, b. ca. 1825 Dundee
Fanny McManus, b. ca. 1830 Dundee

I can’t find either so am unable to find their parents. I’ve tried the Scottish equivalent of the records search and keep bringing up a blank.

They married at some point, but I don’t know where, but they lived in Leicester in St Mary parish. I believe their church to have been St Mary de Castro which I think is CoE, thus likely ruling out the RC records in Scotland. All their children appear to have been born in Leicester, the eldest being Ferris, who was on the 1871 census ages 16. However, that census also has London crossed out as birth place for Fanny, replaced with Dundee.

1871 - Bakehouse Lane, Leicester. Kids on census: Ferguson, James, Fanny, John, Mary A, Elizabeth (my great grandmother), Catherine (also my great grandmother). (Yes, my grandparents were first cousins  :-X)

I have always been told that the Campbell name in the family comes from the Campbell of Argyll clan, and that is what I’d love to know more about.

Oh wow! That was so quick!

Sorry, I meant to type Fergis, but autocorrect clearly didn’t like it.

I will go and have a look at all your suggestions and see what I can find out.

So you would expect to find the newly married couple in London area in 1851.

There is this one but wife is down as Mary not Fanny.  However birth for son John seems to match this birth John Campbell Jun 1851 St Geo Southwark mothers name MacManus

John Campbell 20 born Dundee shoe maker
Mary 23 born Dundee
John 1? born Southwark

Kind of fits, what do you think?

Little John may have died which would explain a later child being named John.

No further details online for the 1850 marriage that I can see so you may have to take a chance on getting the certificate to find out their fathers names and other info.

John Campbell
Frances McManus

Should stress there are 3 other couples listed under that reference and it doesn't say who belongs to who so up to you.
