Pickle Factory Berlin Germany
« on: Wednesday 26 June 19 06:41 BST (UK) »
Looking for the name of a Pickle Factory in Berlin after WW2 situated very close to the Berlin Wall
in the late 1940s early 1950s.  The names of the owners of the factory would be useful too.
Helping a friend (born 1940)  complete his F/Tree and he recalls sneaking across the Wall from the East to have some pickle and sandwiches the kind Owners gave him.  he cannot remember the factory's name.  Hope sks can help.
Kind regards

it would help if you had at least stated where he lived in east Berlin.
north-south-east-west etc

btw. They started building the wall 1961. So that means he was crossing demarcation lines between East and West Berlin, not the wall.

Hi Davecapps,
many thanks again for your interest.
The young lad was born in Baumschulenweg, East Berlin in 1940.  He was only  a boy when he visited the Pickle Factory so your timing would be correct.
Can you help with name of Factory and it's Owners.
Kind regards

It looks like solidrock is correct with the posting of the Berlin Pickle Factory. I googled the subject and could not find a better answer.

Could be Spreewald Pickle.

https://www.berlinjournal.biz/en/short-history-spreewald-pickle/

The link is interesting, but it is simply a history of the Spreewald pickle, i.e. the pickle itself and not a specific company.

In the text, it says that during the GDR era, the pickles from the region became state-owned under Spreewaldkonserve Golßen. This company still exists, albeit under a different name:

https://www.spreewaldhof.de/ourhistory.html

So perhaps it was the Golßen family who gave the young lad his yummy pickles.  :)

Best regards,

The Baumschulenweg is a district in Berlin, Treptow-Köpenick.

The Spreewald pickle mentioned in solidrock´s post refers to a region centered in Lübbenau and that´s  about 88 Km south of the Baumschulenweg.
I very much doubt that a 10 year old boy would go that far for a pickled gherkin

Good point!

I should have taken more time to read the website in more detail. I thought Golßen was the family name - didn't realise it's an area.

Many thanks to Karen McDonald, DaveCapps, Solidrock  and barryd for their replies and information.
Looked up the the site of Spreewaldkonserve and also emailed them for further details re early Owners/Managers names.
Spreewaldkonserve was operating in 1946 -- could be the one, although 88Ks is a fair distance to travel for a gherkin.
Thanks for all your help'
Regards
Barry
