Baptism of Eliza JAY at St Edward the Confessor, Romford, on 16 July 1826 - parents Edward and Elisabeth JAY.  (Transcribed on Ancestry, no image.)

No JAY/HICKS marriage listed.

Trish,

What I have worked out(?) so far is that she had a daughter, Emma Elizabeth Jay 1845, before she married William. They then had Mary Ann Jay 1849. Her mother's maiden name is listed as Hicks.

The 1851 census lists her as living with her father and both children.

An additional complication is that I think she then married William Savill in April 1854. However, the children that union produced are listed on the GRO with a mother's maiden name of Higgs...

Josey, I've not found anything on Ancestry but their search seems a but hit and miss...

....... can you find Jonas' baptism?

Sadly, no :(
There are a few of them scattered around Essex, but no JAY or HICKS or father Edward.

Josey, I've not found anything on Ancestry but their search seems a but hit and miss...

You need to go straight to the Essex records, thereby excluding the rest of the world :)
I go via the 'Card Catalogue' and put 'Essex church' as the title, nothing else.

Carol,

If she was baptised as a Jay does the Hicks come from?  ???

At this moment, I have no idea!  It's late here and I've run out of ideas so will leave you in the capable hands of Trish, Josey, and anyone else who'd like to chip in.  Good luck :)

Hi Richard. I came across your post from 2019 when I too was looking for the explanation of an alias on a marriage certificate. It turns out we were both looking for the same person. Eliza Jay is my 2 x great grandmother, her daughter Rachel Martha Savill was my Great Grandmother & her daughter Emma Eliza Chapman my grandmother.
Two years on I wonder if you have found out any more information regarding the Hicks alias. As the name Higgs features in her sons name Charles Higgs Savill I wonder if there is a mix up between Hicks & Higgs on the marriage record & certificate. As both Eliza & William were illiterate (hence his & her marks on certificate) they wouldn't know it was written down wrong if the clerk misheard Higgs for Hicks? Just an idea to add to the many already given on your post.
I would be interested to hear if you have found anything more.
Best wishes
Marion

Welcome to Rootschat Marion.

As I tried to help earlier with this I was notified of your reply.

Bapt;
St Edward the Confessor, Romford, Essex
ELIZA Jay 16 Jul 1826 Daug of EDWARD/ELIZABETH
Father a Labourer
Abode Romford

+ 02 Nov 1823 St Andrew, Hornchurch
JONAS Jay son of above
+ same Church JAMES Jay 03 Jun 1821

From 1851 Edward Jay is born Cranham and his Bapt is there 1781 (to Edward/Mary).
Also his Parents Marriage 1781 South Weald, Edward of Cranham

All info on FreeREG

I cant see a Marriage for Edward/Elizabeth that seems to fit 1810-1821.
Possibly they never married and Elizabeth was a Hicks/Higgs.

Hopefully in the last 2 years Richard has figured it all out!

Trish :)

Thanks for all the info Trish. I have a copy of Rachel Martha Savill's birth certificate, 24 July 1868, parents William Savill & Eliza Savill formerly HIGGS.

I haven't heard of or tried FreeREG so thanks for the recommendation. I looked at Eliza Jay's baptism on there & can see that the surname given is the fathers so we shouldn't assume they are married.

Nothings ever simple!
