John Mattenley abt 1665 Great Wishford, Wiltshire
« on: Saturday 29 June 19 18:09 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I've been tracing family tree and got stuck with this individual in regarding to birth and marriage.... He was married to Joyce (no surname found) and had three children - John, Richard and Robert.

I tried to search for his birth and can only find one John Mattenley born in London 1664.... I adjusted his birth year from between 1660 to 1670... Again increase to 10 years in between, still only one came up for London in Oct 1664. This is not the right one as John in London died in 1664....

My John Mattenley was born around 1665 and died in 1702 in Great Wishford, Wiltshire.

Does this means I'm at dead end with this individual?

Have you tried adjusting the spelling of his surname?  You might get some different results.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

I have set it to "sound like" and still nothing for 1665 in Wiltshire... Hence why I'm on this thread in the hope that somebody local to Wiltshire might know the best way to search for Wiltshire records...

Have you loked at other sources of information?
Once you get past the start of parish registers, you have to delve into other areas, and spread the net wide.
Have you searches the National Archives Discovery website? It holds a wealth of information.

It is not as good as some other sites at soundex on names, so as Milliepede says, you may have to be creative with the spelling of the name.

Some areas I can think of for searching.
Wills. Not just for your man, but other names you may have related to the family, or any others you know lived in the same place.

Hearth Tax mid 1660s.
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C16851583
There may well be a printed version of this somewhere on-line if you do a search. Many of the areas of the uk have been published.

Manor records and Court Rolls.
I see there are several for Great Wishford on The National Archives.
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/N16165117
Plus others.
Many of these seem to be held at Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre.

Do you know his occupation? He may have had an apprenticeship. Try a search for that.
Lane, Burgess: Cheshire. Finney, Rogers, Gilman:Derbys
Cochran, Nicol, Paton, Bruce:Scotland. Bertolle:London
Bainbridge, Christman, Jeffs: Staffs

Thanks I will look at the links you just posted, there aren't really much info about him on his children's records - just his name and his wife's name.

There is will of some sort but unfortunately I could not read the cursive writing very well... https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/61333/47285_263021009496_22674-00001

Not a problem!
I don't have an Ancestry sub, so can't access it.
There is a special board here on Rootschat for handwriting deciphering - you will see there have been requests to transcribe many, many wills.
If you post it (or in parts if it is too big), we will help to transcribe it.
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/handwriting-deciphering-recognition/
(It's aways better to post it on the board rather than give a link to it on some other site - easier for the transcribers who might be able to help you).
Hint: You are allowed up to 500 kb per image, so try and get each one as near to that as you can - it makes it much easier to read them, especially if the 'hand' is tricky.
