I have tried to find a John James who married a Mary ??
In Gloucester
They had at least one child 13/5/1752 st Mary de lode

The oldest directories on-line appear to be around 1790's - Ancestry have now taken on the "Old Directories from Leicester University".
I'd try Gloucestershire Records Office - see what they have.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids. They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
