Finding Carmichaels

Hi I'm looking for my 2x Greatgrandfather James Carmichael born abt 1832 in Ireland all I have is his fathers name was John also born Ireland and they at some point emigrated to Scotland where James met his wife Lilias Ainslie they married 25 Sept 1854 in Manchester Cathedral but that is all I have on them.

I started looking for irish clues in the English and Scottish census
John Carmichael
children
James Carmichael b~ 1832 Ireland French polisher in 1861 emigrated to Scotland where James met his wife m 25 Sept 1854 in Manchester Cathedral Lilias Ainslie b Midlothian~1834

Do you have a copy of the marriage details inc witnesses etc ?  Are you a member of ancestry?
Manchester Cathedral records gives The full catalogue is now available and fully searchable on the “Access to Archives” website http://www.a2a.org.uk through the National Archives. The Parish registers have been digitised by http://www.ancestry.co.uk and can be searched at their site. Free access to Ancestry.co.uk is available from any Manchester City Council library.

so far from familysearch.org I have the marriage date 25 Sept 1854
in 1841 census in Hunters Close a houseof multiple occupation High Street Lanark Glasgow is a John Carmichael b 1791 no location a masons labourer is living with a Mary Carmichael  b 1796 a washer woman and son James b~1831 no location ,with a William Carmichael b 1833 [a 2nd son?]
in 1841 she is the 8yr old dau of Mary  Ainslie with brothers Andrew  an iron founder  age 14 George an engineer age 16, sis Helen 1829, sis Mary 1835
in 1851 census is a james Carmichael French polisher newton village Yorkshire west  riding aged 20 b Ireland boarding with the Sutton family another lodger is also a French polisher  Where has James learnt his French polishing as an apprentice to ?
in 1851 census Lilias Ainslie b1854 is a house maid  in Gt king sr Edinburgh  with Jane Duncans houses and g[arden]

in 1861 enumeration district 18 Dundee 2ndForfarshire (Angus)

Have you tried a search like this on

from there you can select time frames from list on left....

Thank you all for trying there is some useful info all posts, especially yours  BallyaltikilliganG  :) I will keep digging and hopefully something will turn up I do have James and Lilias marriage certificate but the wittnesses names are not easy to read one is Isabelle ? and the other is William ? and of course it doesn't help having a common name like John and James but I am almost certain the census info is them but I will double check. Many thanks again.

The marriage certificate has John Carmichael as a Cabinet Maker.
Maybe that will help, presuming that it is correct, of course.  :)
