Paterson's of Kirriemuir
« on: Thursday 11 July 19 21:07 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My 3xgt-grandmother was Jean Paterson (1765 - 1841). She and at least four siblings were born in Kirriemuir in the 1760s. Their father was Gilbert Paterson, but their mother is not named on the baptism records for the children.

I think it is likely that the mother was from Kirriemuir, or nearby, and Gilbert was from elsewhere.

Does anyone have anything further, please.

Thanks,

Gordon

I found the family you mention but sadly no marriage for Gilbert.

GILBERT PATERSON children born Kirriemuir
WILLIAM 1763, JEAN 1765, ISOBL 1767, DAVD 1769

If they followed the Scottish naming pattern I suspect this is Gilbert.

GILBERT PATERSONE parents WILLIAM PATERSONE/ISOBEL FINLAWSONE 12/07/1730 Alyth, Perth & Kinross.

With that assumption the parents of Gilberts wife would be David and Jean, unfortunately there are quite a few possibilities in Angus but none in Kirremuir.

Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

I have found an additional record on Freereg which knocks my theory on the head.

John 16 Jun 1761 – father Gilbert

Kirriemuir abode Knowhead of Tarbirn then Muirhead of Logie then Ground of Logie

James and Thomas Paterson also had children in the same period they were both Weavers but no occupation noted for Gilbert. In 1775 James was at Knowhead of Tarbirn.

Likely they are all related?

Hello Colin,

Thank you very much for this information.

There are a number of Paterson births in Kirriemuir, where the father was James Paterson, in the 1760s and 1770s.

If, as you say, James Paterson was a weaver, then I think they could well be relatives.

John Thomson, the first child of David Thomson and Jean Paterson (my 3xgt-grandparents) was a weaver and married a woman from a weaving family in the West Riding of Yorkshire.

I think that it is most likely that there were two James Patersons, with a family, in Kirriemuir in the 1760s and 1770s.

Kind regards,

Gordon

I have found the following on Scotland's People:

Gilbert Paterson Birth: 17 Feb 1735, Cruden Aberdeenshire; Father William
James Paterson Birth 24 Mar 1740, Cruden Aberdeenshire; Father William
