Llanwenarth Ultra parish
« on: Saturday 13 July 19 23:34 BST (UK) »
Greetings, I am searching for the correct spelling of a hamlet located in the former parish of Llanwenarth Ultra, Monmouthshire.  I am having difficulty deciphering the writing from my gr. grandfather's birth registration dated 1842.  The writing suggests "Tufnell" or "Tuswell".

Many thanks for the assistance.
cheers
ian

Like you, Mike, i spent a lot of time last evening looking at the nls maps, to no avail.

I think it would be best if Ian was able to put up a snip of the certificate showing the place so that we could interpret.

Type Tuswell, Monmouthshire into Google and it returns a number of entries, archeological and others. Mainly PDFs. Only on my phone so not searched the documents but may be worth a look.

Links suggest it used to be St Oswald.

For registration purposes Llanwenarth ultra and citra became part of Llanfoist in 1935, I might widen the search a bit, maybe south of the river, in case it was a very spread out parish.

Either way it’s a beautiful part of the county

I'm looking at Twyn Wenallt and Twyn Allws (west of Govilon) and wondering if the word has been abbreviated. It would be good to see a snip of the cert.

I wondered about Twyn Allws, looking at a modern ord.  survey,  but the map is huge, spread out on the floor and mazi cannot watch the cricket with me in the way  ;D ;D ;D
