Orphanage in Ardwick
« on: Saturday 20 July 19 22:19 BST (UK) »
I have a letter dated May 1, 1877 addressed to three brothers at the Ardwick Orphanage. I can confirm that, as your earlier respondent said, the address of the orphanage was 111 Stockport Road, Ardwick, Manchester. The letter was sent from Tullahoma, Tennessee, USA by one Henry Butterfield, who apparently was the boys' maternal grandfather. The boys' names were Alan, Harry, and Walter Parker, aged about 14, 11, and 5 at the time. I have evidence but not proof that the boys were born in Ormskirk, Lancashire, and that their mother died in 1872 and their father in 1873. Eventually all three boys immigrated to the States and settled in Tullahoma. I don't have any other details about the orphanage. If in your search you find any information about the Parkers or the Butterfields, I would appreciate hearing from you.
