Hi Ladyhawk,

I have 10 children born to Richard Pratley & Sarah and have managed to find all their baptisms in the Leafield registers. (There may be more) The first one was Avis bapt. 9-2-1846 Leafield so I can presume Richard & Sarah married before or near 1846.

Like you, I have Richard aged 20 in 1841(HO 107 / 879/ 13) with John, who I believe is the father of Elisha.

I have them with 4 children (Avis, Mary, Ann & Augustine) on the 1851 census (HO 107/1732 - 162/1)

In 1861 they are with 6 children (Ann, Augustine, Thomas, Jane, George R, Harriett)  (RG 9 / 909 - page 20)

In 1871    "      "      "   6      "      (Thomas, Jane, George R, Harriett, Clara, Alice) (RG10 / 1455 Page 10)

In 1881(RG 11 / 1518 page 10)  Sarah is a widow, Gloveress,  with a boarder but have not found a burial for Richard

1891 (RG 12/1178 page 2) Sarah is with dtr Alice & g/son and;
I have a burial for Sarah 2-3-1893 Leafield.

It posing a mystery although, as you have mentioned previously, the marriage of Richard Willett to Sarah Pratley has me baffled - have their surnames been turned around?

Richard Pratley & Sarah have about 10 children one of whom is a son baptised

Augustine Pratley 19-1-1851 Leafield who marries  a Sarah Ann Harris 25-12-1878 in Kilburn, London

and he is recorded as Augustine Pratley Willett  who lists his father  Richard Pratley Willett.

Are there any clues on the above marriage? Witness names?

What was father Richard Pratley Willet occupation?

I'm still thinking that the Richard Willet (father Philip) who married 1845 is the son of
Philip PRATLEY & Ann WILLET

Was hoping to find a baptism RWP to confirm but the only one I could find  was
Richard Prately s/o Phillp Pratley & Ann

Hi

I think all those entries relate to the Augustine s/o Richard.

I have him 1851 & 1861 but not in 1871 (but you have found him in Reading as a groom) which ties him nicely as he is a coachman when he marries in 1878 in Kilburn.

In the 1881 he & Sarah have no children with them although I found a Clara bapt. 1879 in Idbury, Oxon.

In the 1891 Willesden -  he is a Coachman with 5 children born 1883 - 1890. Again this explains with his imprisonment 1879 of 12 months why no children between 1879 & 1883.

All censues say his place of birth is Leafield etc, Oxon

The alias Pratley/Willett is interesting.

I think Augustine dies in 1899 as I have a death regis for Paddington Dist. aged 46

Hi.

Well I have another twist to the story; Sarah Ann Harris (who married Augustine Pratley 1878) is the d/o William Harris  & Harriet.  bapt. 19-8-1855 Idbury.  Harriet married William Harris 1850 Shipton and her maiden name was Pratley d/o Philip

The news clips on   Augustine's death interesting.
