When searching online databases I am frequently confused if I should enter Middlesex or London into the search.
Presently searching for an elusive ancestor in Old Street what should I put?  Or does it not matter in the case of London?

Put whichever would have been correct at the time of the event. If in doubt then run searches on all of the options.
