Irish School Roll Books decoding!
« on: Tuesday 23 July 19 18:09 BST (UK) »
I was fortunate enough to be given access to the old school rolls of some relatives
Those from the 1930s are scored out of 10 but by the 1970s they used codes
G= good
VG= very good
F= fail

we are assuming S= satisfactory

There is also a C and a W given for some children
These are listed in the columns against subjects taken

I would appreciate if anyone can shed some light on what they may have meant
Thank you in advance

Don't know about C or W but fairly sure F is fair, we didn't get codes on the report card it was always written, I wonder could C be Could do better.

I would agree with OP that F= Fail. The "fair" part of the spectrum is already taken by S = Satisfactory.

OP what type of school is this - primary or secondary?
In a secondary school, I could imagine W = Withdrawn.

Thank you all for your comments

These were not the school reports that was sent home but the record held in the school
It was from a primary school
On rereading we think the C is a badly written G!

Yes G not C, these letters should match up with the report sent home so if I can find that one I have it should help. Don't think I ever got anything starting with a W.

Ah yes, weak, nice one dathai.
Very Good, Good, Satisfactory, Fair and Weak.

I must have blocked out the weak from my mind because I surely got a few for Irish. ;D
