What is this place on a baptism from 1740 in Tealing? ELDER
« on: Wednesday 24 July 19 18:31 BST (UK) »
Hello,

What is the place of baptism mentioned in the record for Margaret Elder in 1740 in Tealing Parish? Is it possibly Ballumbie as it is known today? Just checking to make sure. Any help appreciated.

EDIT: I don't think Ballumbie (today in NE Dundee City) was ever in Tealing Parish so unlikely?

It used to be part of Murroes Parish. So it's not the one I'm looking for I believe.

From Scotland's Places.

"Ballumbie" was found in the following texts

Forfarshire (Angus) OS Name Books, 1857-1861
 Land tax rolls 1645-1831

So not sure where else to look?

I'm not entirely sure the record actually references "Ballumbie" as it is known today. I had a look on old maps and Ballumbie seems too far from Tealing for it to be possible. In Tealing Parish there are a lot of farms/cotter towns that started with "Bal..." So I suspect it's a place that no longer exists. It does look like a corruption of Ballumbie but I can find no reference to anything similar on maps or sites. Hoping someone might be able to decipher.

I read it as Balleambo, but I have no suggestions as to where it is or was.

There are three other baptisms of Elder, father James, in Tealing around the same time. Do any of those give the place of residence? If they were a settled Tealing family and only temporarily resident in Ballumbie, they might have brought Margaret 'home' to be baptised there?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks, that's a good point. I will check these other records when I'm back home later and get back to you.

Skoosh, I suspected this may play a part as well.

Might be worth having a wee poke around on the map below...not sure about the name of the place starting with a 'B' that's part of Caputh Parish showing bang in the middle of Tealing Parish.
