Well there's a mix of styles isn't there.
The relatively plain backdrop & refined pose is typical of the 1870's.
However I would expect to see a chap his age (agree around 60) in the
more familiar frock coat or braided lounge jacket.
This double-breasted jacket seems to nod towards a frock coat but more in
the style of the 1880's.
His tie is not the type one would expect to see in the 70's which would be a bow or cravat.
This style commonly called a Oxford was an 1880's creation.
So I think 1880's but didn't go for the dramatic theatrical backdrop instead preferred
something a bit more sedate.
There's also an off chance it may creep into the 90's.

Gentleman is friends family --1792 -ish… or earlier? George esq. Cheshire England. Maybe. (Grenville Lodge, Winsford.) Trying to find original owner to scan back of photo - its a digital image on ancestry.

Exciting new photo for the family - but mysterious in its date. Please help.  :-\

Is he one of the George Cross's mentioned here?

Cross - On February 21, at Nurse Phillip's Hospital,
George William Arthur, beloved husband of Amy Cross,
Broad Arrow-road, and eldest son of the late George Cross,
Esq., Greville Lodge, Winsford, Cheshire, Eng; aged 60 years.

Matt, so NBN is working......hmmm- cant connect to Netflix though... >:( You have the correct family - this man is the father of the George William Arthur Cross that came to Aust, died Kalgoorlie...Photo is also George Cross and died in 1880 at 66 in Cheshire, so I do think this is the elder one who never left England. Thanks you for your interest.  :-*
