A nuisance enquiry!
« on: Friday 26 July 19 12:57 BST (UK) »
Hi there. I have registered here in the hope that someone might recognise the crest on this travel clock which I acquired recently. I have no information about its history but the crest looks insufficiently detailed to have meaningful significance?
Any relevant suggestions will be appreciated.
Roy

Hello Roy,

It is called a Naval Crown and is only granted to naval officers of (what I believe are called) the Flag ranks. It goes above the helm and below the crest. Usually the torse would be omitted, as this takes its place.

Strange to have it on a travelling clock, as the only people who would see it would know what rank the person was. I would therefore surmise that it was part of a set of Gentleman's Accoutrements and probably a gift to the newly promoted.

Because it is not a crest in itself, but rather an addition to one, it is probable that, at the time of purchase the owner was not yet armigerous.

Regards
