Who is William Robinson ? Probably Co Down 1871
« on: Monday 29 July 19 17:14 BST (UK) »
This inscription is on the flyleaf of a copy of "Scott's Poetical Works" which belonged to, and was also signed by my maternal grandfather, Matthew Davidson, in 1931. The latter was a tailor, lived in Banbridge and was involved with its Literary Society in the early 1900s. It is possible that the book was in the possession of that society or its predecessor Banbridge Reading Society. I have failed to identify William Robinson and his maiden aunt Miss Moore and it is unclear if the middle name is a second forename or the first half of a hyphenated surname. I am not entirely sure what the middle name actually is.

The inscription is clearly in an adult hand. It reads

"To Miss Moore
A small token of gratitude from her affectionate nephew
Wm... puzzle word... Robinson

Dec 1871"

Anyone recognise this family ? The book could conceivably have come from anywhere in Ireland.

Signature looks like Wm. George Robinson.

This one was 45 in 1901-

I have no idea if William was a tailor or not. He was clearly educated and , to judge from writing, an adult in 1871 (15 seems a bit unlikely, and I am not entirely convinced about "George"). It is clearly a possibility that his mother's maiden name was Moore. I investigated, without success, many Williams in the BD&M indexes on irishgenealogy.ie , including a William S Robinson, born Belfast , who appears in Wales census 1871. His S however sadly turned out to be Stewart. I have a suspicion that the little mark after the middle word is a hypen

I didn't say that the one in the census was the one you were looking for. It's entirely possible he either died before 1901, is listed with only 1st Christian name or left Ireland.
I think the 'little mark' is not a hyphen but a 'little mark.' It appears in several places like the end of the sate.

Having printed it, scanned it and darkened it --- I also think the middle name looks like 'George'!
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

The surnames of Robinson and Moore, I would not have regarded as particularly Irish -- and there is no evidence that this particular copy of the book originated in Ireland.

Having said that - there was a William George Robinson baptised in Aug 1831 but in St Andrews, Dublin. Father Thomas - mother Sara or Lara.

It looks like this William George Robinson married a Mary Jane Gunning in Grangegorman, Dublin in 1864. Father again shown as Thomas.

However it's a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack unfortunately (although it may be useful to find a marriage of Thomas Robinson to Sara or Lara and hope that her mother's maiden name was Moore!

If I remember correctly I did a Search  something like this and I think there was even a marriage for a Moore Robinson.... not saying there is a connection!!

If one wants Ballymena one one can select Ballymena from Search results even looking for clues with witnesses etc. or Belfast etc
