1841 census
« on: Wednesday 17 August 05 14:34 BST (UK) »
I've finally managed to find my family on the 1841 census!!  However, in the box 'where born' some of the family are ticked as being "Scotland, Ireland or foreign parts".

My question, daft as it may seem, is whether England was considered foreign parts, or am I to assume they were born in Scotland, Ireland or somewhere farther afield?

Thanks, Julie

Hello Julie
I think the  enumeration instructions for 1841 were to mark
the colunmn with an S for  Scotland and I  For Ireland.
The English ancestors i have found have had a tick in the column.
Having said all that  some of my ancestors from Llanfihangel Bryn Pabuan and Llangynidr parish`s in Breconshire  have been awarded foreign status in one of the North Monmouthshire  parish`s.

Thanks Rhys.

I think I may have just found my family in 1861 - and they are listed as being born in England (no indication whereabouts though), so it looks like your theory on a tick meaning England is correct.
Thanks again
Julie
