How do I find who lived in the house years ago?
« on: Tuesday 30 July 19 19:37 BST (UK) »
Hia folks,

I want to know how you can find who lived at certain addresses before my ancestors did?  Hope that made sense?  I am not sure how to find this information without knowing the person's name.

I'm researching "Morris" family name based around a remote area of Shropshire called Claverley.  One property I do know the name of is Woundale Cottage, which is/was the Lodge of Chyknell Hall.  I believe the property was built around 1858.  Eric Morris and May (Margaret) lived there in the 1970s (my great Uncle)  I know it has since been rebuilt and am not really interested in who lives there now.  What I want to know is, will a Census tell me who lived there in 1861/1871 etc?

I have two other properties, also in Claverley, but I have no idea of the name of the country lanes they are on as Google street view does not give that information.  One of these houses my Great Aunty Edie (Edith) lived there in the 1970s.  The other belonged to my Great Grandfather William Morris.

Hope someone can help or point me in the right direction.  Sorry it's all a bit vague.

Thanks

There's a page at the front of each census enumeration district which describes the area the census enumerator has to cover. Names of roads on the boundaries of the area will be named. If it's a rural area individual buildings on the route might be mentioned by name e.g. a pub, a farm.
Names of houses and roads may have altered during the past century and a half.
The Genealogist has an address search function for census.
Did the properties have land attached? Tithe records name occupiers of titheable property in mid-19thC England.
Are all the people whom you named now deceased? (RootsChat no living persons rule.

Thank you for your kind replies, it's taken me a while to get back on here to look at them!

Is Family Search.org a "free" site?

Hopefully I've got an hour or two this evening to look into this latest piece of research!

I've clicked on the above link, but I can't seem to locate a Census that is "free!"  How do you know it's Woundale from the link you sent above? I'm guessing you can see it on the Census which I am unable to look at :/  I don't spend a lot of time with research these days so I don't want to pay anything (mean I know)

Am I able to put those numbers that you mentioned above (1871 2744/59/18) anywhere to look at the information relating to it?
