Info about 33rd Foot in 1880s
« on: Saturday 03 August 19 17:26 BST (UK) »
Hi - new to the forum so hope I'm in the right place. Looking for ANY information or suggestions that would help in identifying my grandmother's father who served in the 33rd Foot. She was called Eileen Mary Gore and she was born in Rawal Pindi in 1884. Thanks

Welcome to Rootschat!

Eileen Mary Sidney Annie Gore was born 10 December 1884 and baptised at Rawalpindi on 25 February 1885. Her father Charles William Gore was a Major in the West Riding Regiment (which was indeed the 33rd Foot).

There is a digitised record at TNA https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C13290614

Per an 1873 marriage announcement (Belfast Newsletter 30 August 1873) he was the eldest son of "Major Gore, late 72nd Highlanders ".

The 1873 marriage record (Ootacamund, Neilgherries, India) reveals that his father too was a Charles William Gore.

An interesting addition to this line of enquiry is that Eileen Gore's eldest son was Desmond McMullen, a World War II ace . We're hoping to fill the tree out as best we can but the family records are very flimsy so the next thing will be to try and find a birth place and date for Charles William Gore (the son) . Thank you again for the enormous help ShaunJ.
