The article focuses on health analysis and the potential negatives. It is does not give balanced arguments for and against testing and gives no understanding of the benefits of testing for genealogical research.

We all leave enough spit on coffee cups for a vibale test, without giving it a second thought.

I find the article very incoherent.  For a start you have to differentiate between the different kinds of tests, their scope and resolution.  Not all genetic information is equal or significant either genealogically or from a health perspective.

As for the criminal justice system using the open databases, that risk was always there and recognised early on particularly in the Y-DNA surname research community were it is obvious that even a low resolution Y-DNA test of a unknown male could reveal a likely surname.

Now the testing companies have sought to address the forces of law and order contractually such that the databases will be partitioned in future. Bear in mind that there is no lawful chain-of-custody or validation with the commercial testers. This just gives the police a big pointer and they will need further means to convict.

And no - you cannot get your DNA 'back' but you can get your sample destroyed and your results removed from any internal database.  That does not prevent other close relatives from getting tested and making their results public - or even listing you on a public family tree.

On the other hand, I always caution people before they get tested that the results may reveal hitherto unknown information or family secrets which might seriously affect their lives.  This is the biggest realisable risk IMHO.

True but at least it is unlawful to get it tested without permission or a court order.

I'm not too sure it would be policed to be honest?
Millions of us testing all the time, all over the world with relatives all over the world.

Hi

Probably no, if your DNA / results are already with US Intelligence, US Law Enforcement Services, FBI, or with commercial companies etc.
