Close up.  It is a common mistake that the crowns changed promptly in 1953.  This is not true as old stock were sued up and in many cases it took 5-10 years before a Q/C badge was produced.

My comment at the beginning was simply that the badge was post 1952 (plus) which your illustrations would seem to confirm.

The crown on the badge in the original post is clearly the Queens' crown as you illustrate on the right hand side of the many badges (and two on the bottom right of the left hand side).

I am happy to concede that the King's crown, your close up ( a TF badge) and most of the left hand side of the many badges, did not disappear overnight and that therefore the King's crown would still be seen after 1952.  However, the reverse cannot be true, the Queen's crown would not be worn before 1952.

The cap pattern remained in service long after the Great War and can still be seen in some circumstances today.  My own photo of 1965 is unfortunately not able to be reproduced.

Would you agree that the original illustration thus is one of the two possibilities:

A Great War era cap with the wrong era badge or
A similar pattern cap worn after 1952 (plus) with a 1952 (plus) correct badge.

No I don't agrees as the badge is a King's Crown badge worn on a WW1 era hat by a soldier wearing closed neck tunic which was replaced by BD in 1939-40 and from 1946/7 would have been worn with a tie.

The OP should continue looking for a WW1 era connection.

You are correct, my argument was badly founded, the optician has been warned to expect an imminent visit.  Thank you.

(I still can't see his tunic)?

PS I can only hope that none of my Gunner comrades from 39 years of service wearing the Queens' crown have watched this thread!

Is the badge in the original post a Staybright version?  These were creeping in around early 1950s when the Boys Battery/Regiment/Junior Leaders Regt. RA still wore that cap and SD tunic etc.

No its not a/a in my opinion.  A full view of the photo would be a great help.

Hey guys,

I thought this was all sewn up and I certainly didn't intend to start such an argument.

The full image is not mine so I have asked that it be e-mailed to me. When I have it I'll attach it in the hope that it settles things one way or the other.

Either way, thanks to all concerned for your interest.

This is the original image. It looks like WW1 to me but I'm certainly no expert.
