William Porteus York 1888
« on: Wednesday 07 August 19 16:02 BST (UK) »
Hello

Was wondering if anyone could help.
I have limited information so this is what I know :
Elizabeth Sissons born c1869 in York married William Porteus in 1888 in York. I have the info I need on Elizabeth and her children and have followed them on the various census but I can't find anything about William, he's not with the family on any of the census.
In 1891 & 1901  Elizabeth living in York and listed as married, by 1911 she's a widow.
I'm trying to find out what happened to William, who his parents were etc so any help would be gratefully received

Thanks in advance
Fiona

Do you have the marriage certificate as that should name his father

Hello,

You say you have all the info on the children - any birth certificates or baptisms with father’s occupation?

There is William b abt 1865 at 1881 4723/119/17

He is single though in 1891 when he is still there.

In 1901 4441/100/11
He is married.

Added - still married in 1911

Hi

Thanks for the reply, its not actually my tree just helping a friend and thought I'd see if anyone had any information or was connected to family before I sent away for certificates, just using Ancestry etc at moment.

If your Elizabeth in 1901 is the Elizabeth E Porteus in service in York (possibly a cover for cohabitation with the widowed 32yo householder George Brown) she doesn’t have son Joseph with her.  So is William the 34yo optician’s labourer boarding elsewhere in York in 1901 with an assemblage of other Porteus relatives including an 11yo Joseph?

Yes to Elizabeth on the 1901 (and also 1911) living in house of George Brown along with one of her daughters Mary

Possibly William and Joseph on the 1901 but not sure.

Thanks

The marriage certificate would give you his occupation to check against census information.
