William Samuel Whittuck born in Totonto?

William James Whittuck married Frances Matilda Slater 27 Nov 1839 at St Swithen church Walcot Bath Somerset. She was born about 1821 – place not known and he was a Lieutenant in the 81st to 85th Regiment of Foot when they married.

They had a son; William Samuel Whittuck who was born 1847 in Toronto, Canada, British North America. In the 1901 census returns he is a Major Retired Army Officer in the Bedford Reg.
William Samuel Whittuck married Frances Wilhelmina Le Quesne 5 Mar 1874 St Helier, Jersey.

From the TNA Reference WO 12/3380 I have this information; William Samuel Whittuck, Regiment 1st Bn 16th (Bedfordshire) Regiment of Foot) Rank Lieutenant, Muster Date 1st April 1871 - 30th June 1871, Headquarter Location Newry, Ireland.

I have been told that Frances Matilda Slater´s father was also in the 81st to 85th Regiment of Foot in Canada at the same time. Can anyone find out where and when she was born about 1821?

Can anyone add more details about these two families?

The census shows Frances Matilda as born in Mauritius,

Her marriage shows her father as John James SLATER a Major in the Army.

A snippet in the Naval & Military Gazette and Weekly Chronicle of the United Service 30 November 1839,

"At Bath on 27th inst., Captain WHITTUCK, 82 Reg., son of S. WHITTUCK, Esq., of Hanham Hall, Gloucestershire, to Frances Matilda, eldest daughter of Major SLATER, of the same corp.

Thank you Daisy for finding the links and some answers for me.

In the meantime I have found out that William and Matilda had at least two more children; both daughters born overseas.

From https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills - the Will of Frances Matilda Whittuck gives their names as beneficiaries.
Amy Georgina Whittuck spinster died 1850 in Bath Somerset.
Mary Caroline Susan Whittuck spinster died 1849 in Bath Somerset.

Can you see if you can find out where they were born?

I wonder what Amy was doing in Italy in 1950?  They both lived to a great old age


I think the Amy Georgiana WHITTUCK that died in 1850 might have been William James WHITTUCK's sister. I can't find a Mary Caroline Susan WHITTUCK, spinster died 1849 in Bath.


Do you have access to Ancestry?  There is a large WHITTUCK family tree on there, I am checking the info. as not all online trees are correct but this one seems right so far. However it does not have William Samuel WHITTUCK on it, even though he shows on the 1851 census

William James Whittuck baptised 8 Jan 1811 Bitton, Gloucestershire; married Frances Matilda Slater 27 Nov 1839 St Swithen, Walcot, Bath, Somerset.

Frances Matilda Slater was born 1821 in Maurituis (British subject) and died  30 Jul 1889 in Bath; burial 2 Aug 1889 in Bath Abbey. Her probate:- Widow late of 33 Beauchamp Place Pont Street Middlesex.
Personal Estate £8595 15s.
To Amy Georgina Whittuck and Mary Caroline Susan Whittuck spinsters daughters of the Executrixes both of 33 Beauchamp Place Pont Street Middlesex.

Children:-
1) William Samuel Whittuck – see my first posting for details.
2) F. C. Whittuck born after 1846 – (No more details about him so far)
3) Frances Ann Whittuck born 6 Mar 1843 Falmouth, Jamaica; married Baron Alexander   Sceberras D'Amico (Yes you read it correctly) Dec Q 1864 at Bath Register Office. Frances died 7 Sep 1935 in Malta and was buried in the Ta' Braxia Cemetery, Pieta, Northern Harbour. – details from www.findagrave.com/memorial.
4) Amy Georgina Whittuck (birthplace  not found) – death in Florence Italy. Thank you for that gem Daisy.
5) Mary Caroline Susan Whittuck –(birthplace not found) death 2q 1949 Bath 7c 0013 – search for M. C. S. Whittuck for FreeBMD entry.

There could be more daughters William And Frances only had 2 sons; the other children were daughters.
