Uniform ID
« on: Thursday 08 August 19 15:00 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find some information about some relatives based on their uniforms and hoping someone here might be able to help.

My paternal grandad Kenneth Wilson Sharpe (set of four photos) born Keighley, 1921. Top left has "Poss Salerno" on the back and bottom right is noted as "Algiers 1944". I have additional photos of him including "Brennar Pass 1944", "Venice 1946", and "Austria 1946". My mum thinks she remembers being told he was a cook.

Edgar Sharpe (sitting) born Yorkshire 1897.

Henry Samuel Reade Kirkpatrick (portrait) born Manchester, 1868. This photo is dated 5th March 1919. I've been told he was in the Cheshire Regiment based on this photo but is there any other info that might be gleaned from it to help track him down? There's a lot of people named Henry Kirkpatrick based on my searches!

Thanks!

Sharpe, Parr, Salt - Leeds/Keighley/Manchester

This might seem a bit of a bore but with three men to look at, the possibility of a number of Rootschatters all working on the same man, and hence duplicaton of effort,  is immense.  It would be far better for you to shut this thread down and open one for each of them in an appropriate place with their names in the title

Kenneth is WW2 era

Edgar WW1 era

Samuel is a bit old even for WW1 so Armed Forces may be the best area to post in for him.

The badge on Edgar's topee looks like Army Ordnance Corps.

As the queue of people wishing to help is smaller than I though it may have been, here goes:

Kenneth is in the Royal Army Service Corps who did indeed have cooks.

Edgar is in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps (pre 1918 simply Army Ordnance Corps - the cap badge had no crown) - I've corrected my earlier thought and say he is post Great War and could even be WW2.  I find no Great War record for him.

Thus records for the first two will still be with the Ministry of Defence :
https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records

The third does have the Cheshire Regiment cap badge.  No Great War records apparent, he was 46 when the war began so may not have served overseas.  The V on his shoulder strap may yield a clue - need to consult elsewhere - volunteer battalions, if that is it, disappeared in 1908).

Henry Samuel is a member of the Cheshire Volunteer Training Corps, a sort of WW1 version of the later Home Guard. Regulations here:

Page 57 has the V on the shoulder strap.
