Help with finding John Pittey

High I am trying to find a birh record of John Pittey born Exeter,Devonsire 1849 ,I can find it on census but it does not give father or mothers name which is what I really need

I found his family on the 1891 census RG12/1887
he was an agriculturer

Children
John 18 bn Curragh Camp, Ireland
Joseph 16 bn Channel Islands
Mary Ann 14, Elizabeth 11 and James 9 all born India
William 7, Edward 5 & Thomas 4 all born Somerset. (Mothers mmn LEWIS on birth registrations)

Militia records confirm Exeter as place of birth

There are military records for a John PITTEY from Exeter, who was discharged unfit in 1888. He was in the Somerset Light Infantry.

I cannot find a corresponding birth given the years suggested in  Devon or on nearest census to birth 1851

Having put John in the search for 1851 there are no Pittey/Pitty families

Having looked at 1891 it appears he was abroad from about 1872-1882 with the military

John's marriage cert would be a good idea

It would appear the surname changes as will Pitty/Pittey

on 1901 he states he was born Catcott

There are a few Patey's in Exeter area.  Accents could change the spelling quite easily
