Marriage look up - All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne
« on: Sunday 11 August 19 08:07 BST (UK) »
Hello !

Wondering if someone could look up this marriage for me:

William Turnbull and Margaret Brown - 16.03.1834, All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

I am interested in finding their parents. I’ve found the following options for William based on an estimated birth year for him of approx 1809/1810:
- John & Isabella Atkinson
- William & Mary Black
- William & Anne
- William & Sarah Dunn
- John & Isabella Stuart

Thanks :)

Fathers are not listed prior to civil registration, however you may get clues as to relatives by who was a witness.

You can see the image of the BT here

Sadly, the witnesses appear to be regulars.

1851 says he is 41, born Heworth.
1841 says he is 36 :o Mason. Born in Durham
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS6K-99QC-K?i=667&cat=562221

Is that 1841 age more accurate? What was William's age on death?
Might bring in a baptism at the Chapelry of Heworth in Jarrow, 2 June 1805 :-\
William, 5(th) child of John Turnbull of Sward Houses, Mason, native of this Chapelry, by his wife Isabella, late Sanders, native of this Chapelry (my commas)
Says born 13 March 1805

Thanks for the reply!

I don't have William Turnbull's death date yet.
Am trying to trace him from the info I have on his son.

John Turnbull b.1834/1835
Another user kindly looked up John's marriage to Isabella Ann Oliver in 1855, a few months ago for me on this thread, which gave me their parents names and occupation - William Turnbull (mason) - (see reply #3 https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=809561.msg6693692#new).

At the moment I was going with the 1851 census info:
William L Turnbull, age 41 (stone mason) and Margaret, age 41, living at Gateshead, Durham. There's a John Turnbull age 16 as part of the household.
Reply #14 here https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=809481.9 has William and Margaret (Brown) marrying in 1834 Newcastle Upon Tyne.

I am struggling to trace the family further back from that...

Great stuff, Trish.
So it's probably one of those two deaths, but which one? Would be good to know.

The second one was buried 12 Feb 1861 at Gateshead.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JC4V-PZV

That's indexed from the parish register (but we can't see it at home, and the BT's don't go up as far)
But so far no info on the William Turnbull who died in 1859.

In the 1861 census the widowed Margaret Turnbull and children are in Ann Street, Gateshead, she seems to have died there in 1866, age 56
Buried at the Cemetery, 31 August, residence 12 Ann Street.

I am almost sure that is my imagination, but is it at all possible that William's age in 1851 could be 46?:-\
We can see the 4 pretty clearly, but the second digit is extremely faint. Possibly something to do with the vagaries of microfilm. I can't decide if it looks more like the 1 for Margaret (41) below, or the 6 for John (16) after her.

As I said, I'm probably just imagining it (sorry!)
Good luck
John
