The 1881 for Arthur Barnd & Rebecca has her as age 30
In 1891 she is 62 . (I suspect the enumerator read this wrongly and should be 42)
In 1901 she is 54
1911 she is 46

She must have had the secret of eternal youth  ;D

Is this her death  :-\

Deaths Mar qtr 1919
BRAND    Rebecca    age 70
Newmarket    3b   817

Hi, Solidrock,

Thank you for your efforts in locating the family in Kent.

I am sad to say that I have the complete family information going backwards.  What I need is the marriage at Barrow, Suffolk of Arthur BRAND and Rebecca RUTTER to learn her father's name as shown on that certificate and the names of witnesses.

Without the complete details of that marriage, I cannot, based on the variable information given for census on which she appears as Arthur BRAND's wife, claim that marriage and those descendants as part of my extended family, which is my goal.

But, I do appreciate your efforts.  Thank you, again.

Hi, Rosie99,

Yes, indeed her ages are given in such a wide range that I don't know if she was truly unknowing of her actual age.  Her mother died when Rebecca would have been about 13 years of age and, well, we certainly wouldn't be able to trust what her father would have said as to when she was born.  There is no birth registration for her, at least not as Rebecca, nor for her siblings Sarah, Caroline and Edward, all circa 1840-1844.

I don't know if the death registration you found is for 'my' Rebecca or not.  Time will tell.  But, thank you for locating that entry.  I will definitely keep it as a possible.

Hi, Milliepede,

Again, thank you for going the extra mile and digging out that information.  Sadly, I have everything I need for the family except that marriage to Arthur BRAND in 1873.

In total, William and Caroline Rutter had 11 children 5 of whom died either in infancy or within the first few years of life.

In 1871 I believe that the Rebecca Rutter working as a servant for Richard Staines and daughter at St. Peters, Maldon, Essex is the Rebecca I am tracking.  On that census she gives her age as 26 and her place of birth as Clare, Suffolk!

I would add that I believe the reason she says she was born at Dover, Kent is that is the birthplace of her father, William Rutter and she certainly was trying to hide her past - for what reason I don't know - perhaps just shame at not having grown up with a mother and a sister in the Kent County Lunatic Asylum.  I now have her baptism at Sittingbourne on 1 July 1838.  On the 1861 census, when she is living with her father, Rebecca and her two siblings birth places are recorded as Sittingbourne.  In 1841 the family was living on High Street in Sittingbourne, Kent.  So, I believe that any mention of Dover as her birthplace is a complete red herring.

Hi,

If someone has access to the record office at Bury St. Edmonds, I would be very grateful if they could do a lookup for me in the Parish Registers of Barrow for the marriage on 22 November 1873 of Arthur Brand and Rebecca Rutter.  I am needing to discover the name of Rebecca's father given on that entry as well as the names of the witnesses.

Many thanks, in advance.

SOLVED/CLOSED - BRAND-RUTTER Marriage -Barrow, 1873
« Reply #16 on: Thursday 22 August 19 01:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I was able to access a copy of the Parish Register for the marriage entry of Arthur Brand and Rebecca Rutter.  It confirmed my suspicions that Rebecca's father was, indeed, William Rutter, a bookbinder.  Her residence was given as Bury St. Edmonds. This all matches information from the 1861 and 1871 census, so I know that Rebecca Rutter was the descendant of my Ruck family in Kent, England.  Witnesses to the marriage were Arthur Brand's sister, Isabella who had married shortly before to Samuel Woods, and his brother-in-law, Samuel Woods.

Thank you all for your interest.
