Thanks. I have his death. He died at sea. And FindMyPast has a wonderful photo of him in their Merchant Navy Records. It has his DOB as 11 Aug 1884, born Gravesend. There's isn't any likely suspects in the GRO Index. I've spent a happy few hours trawling (no pun intended) CityArk and have looked at seven parishes so far. Two years before and five years after 1884, checking all the Martin families' baptisms to see if there are any flavour of grocers or mariners. His father could well have changed occupations later in life to green grocer. (I don't know that his father was a mariner before greengrocer, but pretty typical occupation for Ramsgate). George Joseph's age at marriage ties in with this DOB.
There doesn't seem to be a 55 Belle Vue (Bellevue) Rd in the 1911 census. All the houses seem to be even numbers. But interestingly, in 1929 there's a George Ernest HAMMOND, a grocer who gets married and his place of residence is 55 Bellevue Rd. His father is a master mariner. So I might try and figure out who they are and see if there's a connection.
Thanks for your efforts.
Elizabeth
When/where did George Joseph die? Does his age at death tie in with the age he gave when he married i.e. bc.1884/1885?
Have found a George Joseph that fits that birth timeframe who went in to the Navy - however, his father was never a greengrocer!!
I note that wife Edith remarried in 1933 but was widowed (again?) in 1939.
