Young groom, older bride
« on: Friday 16 August 19 14:23 BST (UK) »
Found this today when transcribing. Bride 41 years older than groom. Interestingly it's the only record on that page that explicitly mentions the ages.

Anyone found any bigger age gaps?

Wow, that is a substantial age difference, and unusual considering the male was the younger of the two! You would think there must be a mistake with the ages wouldn't you?

I would love to know more about them.

Have you done any research on the couple?

A John Humphrey was buried in Purleigh, Essex (where the marriage took place) two months earlier.

Unfortunately there aren't many details on the burial records in Purleigh around this time. There was a John Humphry buried 18/2/1773 but no age given.
There's also a William Clark buried 10/5/1780 - again no age. Could be the groom.
No record of Frances being buried in Purleigh, but I'm still transcribing the marriages so it's possible she could have married again.

I think there's a good chance William was an orphan when he married. His mother could be Susanna Clarke buried 1/5/1775 Purleigh.
I still haven't transcribed the earlier baptism records for Purleigh which would cover the time William was born.

Not an age gap as big as 41 years but in 1811, my 48 year old widowed ancestor Sarah Hurrell married a 17 year old minor called Lewis James in Canewdon, Essex. So 31 years. Still an enormous age gap. Seems there was a liking for toyboys.

Definitely a bit young for her! Were their ages written on the marriage register, or did you deduce their ages from burial records?

Baptism and burial records. Sarah was born in 1763 and died in 1838. She was baptised in 1763. Lewis James was born in 1793/1794 I think. The marriage did say he was a minor.
