James Kenvin (Kynvin)
« on: Tuesday 20 August 19 03:03 BST (UK) »
Various Census date James's birth between 1817 to 1820, and in one, he is stated to have been born at Risca.
His parents were William and Sarah Kenvin.
A number of siblings between 1813 to 1815 are shown to be born at Risca and have the spelling of Kynvin.
However, I am unable to locate any birth record for James anywhere in Monmouthshire.
Can anyone assist please?
Ken.

The only 1841 entry I can find has parents William & Elizabeth.  Indexed as Kenryn but reported to be Kenvyn

HO107 piece 744 book 7 folio 31 page 5

If you have him on the 1841 can you post full details please?  If he is not with parents in 1841 - where did you get parental details from?

William Kenvin, widower of Trevethin, married Elizabeth Townsend, spinster of Machen 2 Feb 1828 in Trevethin. So family would appear to be in Trevethin by this time.

Yes, you're on the button there concerning Elizabeth Townsend.
Makes me think that Sarah passed away shortly after either James or sister Eliza, who I also can't trace, were born.
Many in Ancestry give their mother Sarah's date of death in about 1860 but I think it wold be before William married Elizabeth.
For now, I'm thinking about 1817, but I would like to be sure.
Many thanks for your help here.
Ken

Who did he marry and when?

I am looking at a rather poor 1851 entry which has 3 spellings - Kerwyn, Kenwyn, Kenvyn and a wife Mary.  Birthplace is just Monmouthshire and age transcribed as 21 but think it could be 31
HO107 pce 2449 folio 350 pge 60

There is an 1861 with wife Elizabeth birthplace Risca and birthyear 1817 Kenvin/Kenvyn.  Elizabeth seems to be a second wife

first marriage march qtr 1846 Pontypool James Kenvin & a choice of Marys on the same page. Birth reg of Eliza march qtr 1851 gives Morris as mother's maiden name

death reg Mary Kenvyn 32 dec qtr 1854 Pontypool vol 11a pg 85

Second marriage jun qtr 1856 Pontypool James Kenvyn & Eliza Williams on same page, there's a Williams stepdaughter in 1861.

Death reg for William aged 61 march qtr 1845 Pontypool. Possible baptism in Risca 9 Dec 1787 son of John & Mary.

There don't seem to be parish entries for either of the marriages for James or baptisms for his children. It's possible the family became non-conformist and the records aren't online.

Oh! I can see that you are having the same trouble as I have had.
Going round in circles.
I began with that 1861 Census where it states that James was born in Risca, most others just state Monmouthshire, though his last showed Newport.
I have a Birth Certificate for his son William (b) 31/10/1846 showing James as father and Mary Morris as mother. Mary died 16/10/1854.
I've checked Rootsweb on Dustydocs in every Momnmouth Parish, without success.
It seems that not all records are available or have yet been transcribed.
I think your comment about the non-conformist churches is the key issue.
Many years back, the Gwent County wrote to me, concerning William's children, (my grandmother etc) advising that the family moved around a lot and moved from church to chapel.
Thank you all for trying.
Ken.
