Missing Richards Family from Illogan
« on: Thursday 22 August 19 17:11 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find what happened to Samuel Richards after 1861 when he and his family on the census at Forest Estate in Illogan:
Samuel   Richards   (Head)         25   1836   Male   Coowace   Cornwall   England
Priscilla   Richards   (Wife)         29   1832   Female   Illogan   Cornwall   England
Samuel C Richards   (Son)           3   1858   Male   Illogan   Cornwall   England
Priscilla J   Richards   (Daughter)   2   1859   Female   Illogan   Cornwall   England
Augusta E Richards (Daughter)   9/12   1860   Female   Illogan   Cornwall   England

I haven't been able to track down Samuel's death - on the 1871 census his family are still in the same place, but he isn't there.  His wife Priscilla, is shown as married rather than as a widow, although this could be a mistake:   Priscilla   Richards   (Head)           39   1832   Female   Illogan Cornwall England
Samuel C Richards   (Son)           13   1858   Male   Illogan Cornwall England
Priscilla G Richards   (Daughter)   12   1859   Female   Illogan Cornwall England
Agusta E   Richards   (Daughter)   10   1861   Female   Illogan Cornwall England
Bessie A   Richards   (Daughter)     8   1863   Female   Wendron Cornwall England
Thomas W H Richards (Son)             5   1866   Male   Illogan Cornwall England

I can't find any of the family on the 1881 census, and the next time they show up, Priscilla is in London (and now a widow) with Thomas and her daughter Priscilla Jane is married and visiting Portsea in Hants and Samuel C is also married and living in London.

Samuel C married in 1888, and his father shows as deceased on the marriage certificate.

I'd really appreciate any help in tracking down what happened to Samuel, and what happened to the family between the 1871 and 1891 censuses.

Thank you for any pointers or help you can give  :)

I see on the 1861 Census (transcript on FamilySearch) that Samuel was a copper miner.

Many miners emigrated from Cornwall.  Given that you have found Priscilla and some of the children in England on the 1891 Census, it may be unlikely that the family emigrated a long distance (such as to the Americas or Australia) as the cost of returning to England could be prohibitive.  But some miners moved to find work in Ireland.  It may be that Samuel went to Ireland before 1871 and was followed by his family, and died there.

Another possibility would be the Isle of Man.
Many Cornish miners found work there - indeed Laxey Harbour was built by Cormishmen and bears a remarkable resemblance to Cornish ports!

So, he may be on the 1871 IOM Census - but birthplace is almost certain to be simply "England".

Hi C-A

A lot of miners left Cornwall for other places in the 1860s. My copper mining ancestor went the coalfields of Ayrshire. So you could try there also. Check the census at Scotland's People and also check for a death there.

Did he have other family members who were miners? Brothers or brothers in law. Where are they in 1871? People tended to move in groups so they could help each other out.
He could have gone abroad on a temporary basis and sent money back for the family. A lot of miners went to Mexico.  I would check shipping lists just in case.

P.S. Samuel's birthplace is Crowan.

Thank you.  I've checked on Scotlands People and not finding anything for Samuel Richards between 1861 and 1888 (by which time I know he had died).  Not coming up with anything for his wife or children either  :( but at least that seems to rule Scotland out.

Here is the information you are looking for.
Samuel Richards 1836-1869 and Priscilla Richards 1832 - 1906.  They had 4 children.
Son Samuel Charles(married Mary with twin daughters Elsie and Maud), Priscilla Jane( Married Henry Robinson), Augusta E Richards and Thomas Hawkins Richards.

Samuel Richards died in St Austell, Cornwall aged 33 in 1869. He was buried in St Austell 7th April 1869.
Daughter, Priscilla Jane Richards married in 1887, St Pancras London to William Henry Robinson (1854-1923) William Robinson and his brothers James Alcock Robinson and Arthur Arkinsall Robinson created the Arcadian pottery in Stoke on Trent and later Royal Crown Derby in Stoke on Trent.  J+A & Sons Ltd and Arkinstall & Sons.

The Census shows Priscilla Richards stayed in Cornwall in 1871, but had later moved to Islington in 1891.

It was a challenge to work out this next stage in the 1891 Census, but in the end I did it.

Priscilla had moved to Islington long after her husband Samuel died. Her son Thomas William Hawking Richards also resided in Islington as well as his sister Priscilla Jane Robinson's son Arnold Robinson who was also Priscilla Richards Grandson.  I do not know who was Edith, but Herbert Richard Stanley was my Great Grandfather. He was also Priscilla Jane's Son but he was born before she was married.  Herbert was sent to live as a young child in Wales with a mining family under the surname of Stanley although he still retailed Richard as his middle name.  My Grandfather was an illegitimate child but still had the connections with the Robinson and Richards family.  Hence all the charming family photos on both sides in the family album.
Daughter Priscilla Jane and Henry Robinson together had 4 children.  Samuel Arnold, Douglas Harry, Gwendolen Jenny and Norman Richards Robinson.
They were a successful and affluent family for many years in the manufacturing and trade of porcelain and pottery.

Priscilla(Grandmother) then moved from London to Staffordshire to live with her daughter and family until Priscilla died in Stone Staffordshire in 1906.  Her daughter Priscilla Jane also died in Stone, Staffs in 1925.
All this family tree info and photos is on Ancestry.
