This birth registration is likely to be our Ellen Connell registered in 1851 in Oughterard, Regiment 17th Foot, per GRO Regimental Birth Indices vol 1006 page 23 (according to FindMyPast.co.uk) British Armed Forces and Overseas Births and Baptisms.

Does anyone have access to Roman Catholic baptisms in Oughterard, County Galway?

British Military Barracks in Oughterard were situated about a quarter mile north of the settlement in the townland of Ordnance Ground.  The presence of the barracks was most likely an important feature in the shaping of the modern-day town.

Thanks, Sinann, but Ellen Connell was not baptised there, nor her younger brother John Joseph Connell.  As the family were living in the army barracks, I wonder if the children were baptised by an army padre if there was a chapel.

Ellen's birth was registered in the Army Register and indexed in the GRO Regimental Births index found at FindMyPast.co.uk.  The birth certificate shows that Ellen was born on 28 Oct 1851 at Oughterard and baptised on 4 Nov 1851 (by an Army Chaplain) at Depot 1st Battn 17th Regiment of Foot.  If you use FindMy Past, can you find a birth registration of her brother John Joseph Burke Connell (or O'Connell) in 1853?
