Is it possible that Esther was illegitimate?
And that Joseph White is a father's name "invented" for propriety?

Not seeing an Esther White, with a father Joseph, in any census - so I had to ask.

Entirely possible! Or else she made it up because they had cut her off as per the family story.

We know literally nothing about her before her marriage, other than that story. But that may well be a fabrication itself. I find it difficult to believe that in those days that there’d be many men who would take on a heavily pregnant woman and marry her.

Over the years of storytelling, could it be that the story is about Esther's mother and not Esther?
Facts get blurred over time.

I’ve found her marriage certificate to Benjamin Lewis from 18th Oct 1914 (which is definitely correct) with both living at the same Birmingham address, and around the time that the baby, Lily May was born. The certificate lists her father as Joseph White, a foundry man.

I take from this that the likelihood is that Benjamin was the father but that does not explain the Leeds connection and I cannot find any Esther White’s that match her exact details.

I assume then that Benjamin Lewis is named as her father on her birth certificate
and this is her birth entry.

Lily May LEWIS mmn WHITE
1914  D Quarter in ASTON  Volume 06D  Page 854

ADDED

I wonder if Esther White named her daughter after a family member?

Did Benjamin & Esther have other children?
Are there any naming patterns?

Benjamin Lewis his father we know is Henry (occ. strip castor) from m/c

If I have been looking at the correct census for Benjamin Lewis
Father Henry bn 1855
Mother Lucy bn 1856 nee ARCHER
Siblings James 1877, Ann 1880, William 1883, Henry 1885

Could (father) Joseph White named m/c  be her grandfather and one of his daughters
gave birth to Esther  ???

Entirely possible, though I can’t find any Esther and Joseph in the censuses.

I hadn’t thought of that. Joseph is only from the marriage certificate, none of the family knew of him. They had another child, Albert in 1922. I can’t see on Alberts or Lily Mays on the Lewis side. Thank you for all of your help!

I'm fairly sure Esther Elizabeth working in the asylum in 1911 isn't yours. She's born Milford, Staffs, and there's an Esther White aged 7 in Milford that fits on 1901, parents Alfred & Ellen. Birth registration with mmn Birch, a marriage between Alfred White & Ellen Birch and a marriage in 1917 for Esther Elizabeth, daughter of Alfred, tends to draw a line through her

Oh ok, thank you for finding that out! We can account for her after 1914, but before that, the info I have doesn’t match the records. Thank you though!
