Nora Dalrymple Burns MBE
« on: Wednesday 28 August 19 17:02 BST (UK) »
I believe this lady, born 1895 and killed in London 1940?, was awarded the MBE in 1919 at the age of about 24.
Can anyone give me information please on the reason for her MBE award.
Thank you.

Supplement to London Gazette 8th January 1919 - Assistant in Finance Department, Ministry of Information.

Working back through the pages, all that's listed there is that it was a civil MBE, not a military one (which would of course be the case given her employment)

No info re the MBE, but details of her death:

Burns, Norah Dalrymple, aged 45, MBE:  of 26 Park Hill Road (Hampstead), 17th October 1940 at 26 Park Hill Road.

In UK WWII Civilian deaths.

Sadly looks as if her residence was bombed

https://www.wikiwand.com/en/1919_New_Year_Honours_(MBE)

This also gives a list of the MBE awards for 1919, and mentions Norah in the Civil Division, with her position as Graham's already noted.

She was indeed very young for a MBE, you'd think - I wonder if she had given particularly valuable wartime service?

According to the 1939 Register this lady lived in Hampstead and was Manager of the American Shipping Buying Office.
Can anyone tell me about this organisation please?
Thank you.

I think there may have been a number of businesses which specialised in shipping to the US, and Norah worked for one of them.

I doubt, therefore, that you will get more detail than that to pin down which.
