At least you now have resolved your original question of the name. It sounds as if the staff at the  Register Office we’re very helpfully you.

Perhaps Mary was widowed when she married William, and the Morton is her Maiden name.

I have births with mother's name as her maiden name and as her 'previous' married name.

Just a small point. If you rewrite the mother's maiden name with the 'M' from Mary and 'or' from formerly, it looks the same.
