Perhaps Mary was widowed when she married William, and the Morton is her Maiden name.

I have births with mother's name as her maiden name and as her 'previous' married name.

Just a small point. If you rewrite the mother's maiden name with the 'M' from Mary and 'or' from formerly, it looks the same.
