Laurencedod in Mearns?
« on: Wednesday 04 September 19 09:47 BST (UK) »
I am trying to identify the birthplace of John Findlay "illegitimate son to John Findlay and Margaret Russell" in 1800.

I am reading it as Laurencedod, any suggestions?

It could be Lowrindod which is on this 1796 map of Renfrewshire County
https://maps.nls.uk/view/74400319

Centre Sections Midway, under the A of Mearns and above the R of Parish. (just below the bottom horizontal crease in the map)

Added - just found an older reference (1614) spelling it Laure~dod but it completely disappears from newer maps and is nowhere to be seen in the 1896 map of the area

Dodd/dod = a rounded hill in Scots.

Skoosh.

It was possibly one of the extended family farmhouses which were prevalent at that time but many of which were swept away by the "improvements" during the Lowland Clearances.

The ealiest reference I found was earlier than I thought it has been dated by the National Library of Scotland as 1583-1596 and is Pont33 from the Pont Collection of Maps.
