William Brown Hunter son of James Hunter Sr of the Settlement of Lake Beauport and Isabella Hamel was b 23 Apr 1841

Mary Anne Hunter daur of the same parents was b 03 Jun 1842

Both baptized 01 Jun 1851 at Valcartier Church of England (same church as James' burial reported by eileenwilson)

Witnesses James Hunter and Isabella Fackney

PB

Edited to add: Mary Eldri/ege has June down as the month of her birth in the 1900 US census although the year differs, a probably not unusual occurrence.

The papers are back online at last and have just been looking at Sarah's obituary; it mentions the funeral to be held at James E. Hunter's house, 6 Quincey Street.

1900 has a James and Caroline 66 Quincey Street Occupation Mfg Machinery

James born Jan 1831 Scotland

On his marriage to Caroline Durant 1858 ...born Galashiels to James and Janett

Which comes back to the machine company

you probably have this last bit but wondered if the address helps you out

North Adams Transcript 15 September 1908

There's a story about his anniversary and a photograph of James E. hunter

Searching Hunter and Quincy together brings up a huge amount of info.

@ eileenwilson - thank you for the transcription and the burial record

I am a little bothered by the burial record - if this is my James, then the information from the 1901 biographical publication of the counties of Rock, Green, Grant Iowa & Lafayette, Wisconsin that I quoted at the beginning is wrong in saying that James died aged 92.

@ willsy - thanks for information from the newspapers - I'll try widening the search terms when I next trawl the newspapers!

Found it at last, this is the beginning of the article for James death, 'born in Galashiels and moved to this country in 1833' aged 85 years,  c 1806

Boston Daily Globe 25 June 1891

Thank you for posting those.

Unfortunately it doesn't get me any further with James senior who was born in 1783 and allegedly died in Canada aged 92.

There is this large gap in what I know about him: alive in 1842 and abroad, apparently having two daughters in later 1840s and then nothing for 30 + years until he reportedly died in 1875 when he was a presbyterian minister.

The man's a bit of a mystery!
