William PICKFORD (b. 1790) Mellor ? related to Samuel PICKFORD (b. 1808)
« on: Wednesday 04 September 19 17:30 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,

My 3x Gt grandfather was Samuel PICKFORD, born 1808 in Mellor.

A number a trees on Ancestry seem to give his parents as William PICKFORD, b.1775 in Christchurch, Hampshire and Sarah PHILLIPS, Staffordshire.  Their children were all born in Staffordshire, either side of Samuel, who was born in Mellor.

This family grouping seems a bit unlikely.  I have found in the 1851 census of Marple a 61 year William PICKFORD born in Mellor (Ref: HO107; Piece: 2154; Folio: 24; Page: 6).  His occupation was a Cotton Spinner, where as Samuel's was a Carder.  I think this chap is more likely to be Samuel's elder brother, as Mellor is only two and a half miles from Marple.

Please can anyone access the Mellor Parish Register for Samuel's parents.

Cheers

Mike

There is a baptism for a Samuel Pickford on Family Search and an actual copy from the register. This shows a Samuel Pickford baptised 23/5/1819 in Mellor. Father Joseph Pickford Mother Mary, and their abode was Brook. Joseph was a Weaver. Regards.

Thanks paco,

Regretfully this Samuel can't be mine as my lad was married in 1830.  However, it does highlight that there were a number of families in the area.

A search on A******y for Samuel Pickford baptised Mellor (including other places in Derbyshire)  for 5 years either side of 1812 produces only one result from an actual register. That is 25 June 1815 at Earl Sterndale, illegitimate, mother Ann living in the workhouse.
As they have digital copies of the Mellor registers, and Samuel isn't recorded in them, that suggests that either your Samuel wasn't baptised at all or was baptised in another county.

Thanks Graham,

Just had a thought.  Need to check out the possibility of Non-Conformist and Catholic registers.

Nothing for Samuel c 1808 that I can find.

4 couples seem to be Bapt Mellor c 1811-1821
Seem to be no earlier ones 1800-1811 on F/S.Org.
The 4 couples are;
James/Hellen
Joseph/Mary
Henry/Elizabeth
Joseph/Sarah

Is it possible Samuel was born elsewhere and grew up in Mellor so that is where he thought he was born?

1841 Census in case you dont have it;
Stockport, Cheshire
Samuel Tackford 30 Cotton Carder not born in County
Alice Tackford   30 born Ireland
Daniel Tackford   10
Esther Tackford   8
Ann Tackford   5
Mary Tackford   3
Edwin Tackford   10 mths

Alice doesnt seem to know where she was born also from Census!

Trish :)

The search on "A" (and a similar one on FindMyPast) also look at Non-Conformist registers. The closest was a baptism in Stockport in 1810 but the birth was a few days earlier.

Thanks Trish and Graham,

Currently studying these Non-Conformist records for the area.  All Samuel's records suggest Mellor.  Looking at witness names on marriages, although there is the possibility that some names may be "professional" witnesses.

I have 1841 and other census records.  Alice was from County Carlow, Ireland.

Marriages were often witnessed by the church wardens. That was definitely the case in the parish church of Glossop, of which Mellor was still a chapelry at the time.
