Hi
Findmypast have a service record for a William Charles Bunt with the service number you mention.
Born 1881, resident in Douglas Isle of Man.
He marries a Doherty (Dorothy) Skinner  .
Could this be him ?

Added.. Several interesting pages including a letter about repatriation to Canada.

They are on Ancestry too Tim but you would need to subscribe to view them, maybe you could try a Free Trial for either of of them...try googling for the offers.

Very interesting about the navy connection. My Great x 5 grandfather John Bunt was boatswain on HMS Mars at the battle of Trafalgar. His wife Eliza wrote a diary about her return from Ceylon onboard HMS Trincomalee, after her husband died from fever. The diary is now onboard the ship in Hartlepool and has been published. I too served in the navy.
