James Goddard in Sturminster Newton
« on: Thursday 05 September 19 16:36 BST (UK) »
The oldest record I could find was to a marriage of James Goddard to Anne Harvey in 1783 - but nothing about James' parents or true origin.  His son, William, born 14/3/1800 is my ancestor.

Does anyone know anything about this family?

James Goddard & Ann/e - children baptised Sturminster - Newton, Dorset

Eliza 24 Dec 1786 - mother noted as Betty?

James 3 Oct 1787
Prescilla 19 Mar 1792
Sarah 9 Jan 1795
Thomas 10 Feb 1798
William 14 Mar 1800
James 30 Sep 1810

This just happened to be on family search whilst looking at above baptisms.

1881 - Census
William Goddard age 80 Widower
Born 1801 Sturminster Newton, Dorset
"Hospital Of St Peter Port" Near St Julians Ave Guernsey
Formerly Gardener - Pauper

If this is the correct Ann, it looks as though they were not following the English naming pattern
(Not all did)
Ann Harvey baptism 31 Dec 1756
Sturminster-Newton, Dorset
Parents John & Margaret

That being the case below is the nearest to the place of marriage but there are a number of others.

James Goddard baptism 2 Dec 1750
Lydlinch, Dorset
Parents Robert & Hannah

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

If that is the correct Ann then she is unlikely to be the mother of James born 1810 as she would be 53

Thanks Colin, that confirms what I had from both the Dorchester records office and the web for the kids.  Interesting hints about parents that I didn't know about
