I have come across a place name reference of Norton near Bambaden, Somerset. I can't find this on any map or any parish list. Can anyone help?

Hello and thanks! Yes I looked at all four "Norton" parishes in Somerset but I couldn't find anything around them that even sounded like Bambaden. It must be an old name for a new place. The reference was from 1727. I just don't know where I can look for references to "old names" in Somerset.

More likely a mistranscription, or someone writing down what they thought they heard when they didn't have a clue what it should be.

You could try A Vision of Britain - this is the page for Norton sub Hamdon:

http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/13120

(There used to be another really useful site called The Historical Gazetteer of England's Place-Names at http://placenames.org.uk/ but it's been unavailable for the past few months.)
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

I just realized that Norton sub Hamdon is very close to Dorset which fits with where I expected them to be. Thanks again to both of you:)

Is there any chance that Bambaden could be an error in transcription of Bampton ?

Can you give a bit more information about the reference to 1727?

I think it’s from the “admissions to middle temple”

George Riggs, second son of George Riggs gent. Of Norton near bambaden.

An earlier entry for Stoke reads “ stoke under Hamden “,  you might expect norton to read norton under hamden.

There are no Riggs that I can see in Somerset at that time, but there are some in
Dorset, piddletrenthide, not to far away.
