LOOK UP REQUEST - WILLIAM McKINLAY EDMOND from MUSSELBURGH, near EDINBURGH
« on: Tuesday 10 September 19 10:48 BST (UK) »
Can I draw members attention to a story in the Daily Mail yesterday. A Dutch lady, now aged 84 has been leaving flowers on a British Soldiers grave at the CWGC cemetery in Oosterbeek in Holland since she was 9 years old. The soldier was killed in the battle for Arnhem in September 1944, aged 27.

At the end of the article in mentions that family probably don't know that William Edmond is buried at the cemetery.

Having made a few enquiries it would appear that people have already tried to find a link to the family, that his widow re married, adopted two children who have been contacted and knew nothing about him or their mothers first brief marriage.

Surely there has to be someone out there related to this soldier? Is anyone interested in a having a look into this?

Here is the link to the article:

Hi,

I found that William McKinlay Edmond was born 30th Dec 1917 at 60 Campie Road Musselburgh to parents William Allan Edmond (Coalminer) and Eliza Jane Anderson, on his birth certificate, mothers first name looks like "Joanna" but could be wrong. His mother and father married in 1911 according to Scotlands People website, but father William Edmond gave 30th Aug 1912 on son's BC.

EDMOND, WILLIAM Tenant at 60 CAMPIE ROAD, Musselburgh 1915 Valuation Records - VR006000023

In 1930, I find his father at 19 Millhill, Musselburgh, proprietor at Machinery Tenants Improvements.

By 1940, 19 Millhill is now a factory owned by him, and he is in a wooden house at 39 Eskside South, Musselburgh.

I think he may have had 5 siblings, all born at Inveresk, unable to prove, as some are less than 100 years.

Mary White Anderson Edmond born 1912,

Jane Edmond 1922,

Magdalene Edmond 1925

Thomas William Edmond 1927

Adam Edmond 1929

I have found Obituary notice in Scotsman of 13th July 1943,

" Edmond - At Western General Hospital, on 12th July 1943, William Allan Edmond, woodturner and sawmill, 19 Millhill, Musselburgh. Funerfal to Inverses Churchyard, on Wednesday 14th July. Friends desiring to attend meet cortege at cemetery gates at 2.15pm.gates."

Hope this helps to start a trail to find out more.

Tom.

Tom, from your list of births, likely deaths where mother's maiden name is showing as Anderson:

Mary White Anderson Edmond born 1912 - died 1987 in Inveresk, aged 74.

Jane Edmond 1922 - died in 1995 in Prestonpans, aged 73.

Magdalene Edmond 1925

Thomas William Edmond 1927

Adam Edmond 1929

Additional entries:

There is a death for a William Allan Edmond born 1912 who died in 1994 in Inveresk, aged 81. Mother's maiden name Anderson. Would need to be checked as not sure how this sits with the birth of William McKinlay Edmond in 1917? See https://billiongraves.com/grave/William-Allan-Edmond/20421741

There is also a John Edmond who died in 1987 in Inveresk, aged 72. Mother's maiden name Anderson. Added: he reported father's death in 1943.

Finally, the reference to the David Edmond we have above.

Thank you for all of the replies. I've brought this thread to the attention of someone who has tried to source relatives previously and I'll report back on here once she's responded and had a look.

Monica L:  Your last thread was quite interesting and sounds promising. Thank you.

There are some great people on here.

It will help other to see if they have connections with you if you can add some details on your g grandfather. What his name was, when he was born and parents' details is always a good start. How far back have you managed to get on his direct line?
