Grenadier Guards in WWII - finding correct battalion
« on: Sunday 15 September 19 11:38 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I’m trying to find which battalion a Kenneth A. Gadsby was in.

This is what I know (from his stories, he died in 1995 - no one to ask now): he was at Chelsea, he fought at Normandy, Italy, and North Africa. He was a driver. I have his army number. He joined the GG in 1936 at Nottingham and left in 1946. Strangely, at least to me, he is in Skegness in 1939 as a Lorry Driver with his cousin (also a Lorry Driver) - perhaps extra work whilst on home leave? - I have no knowledge on this subject.

Thank you!
Andrew/s, Atter, Banberick, Barnes, Bedells, Belson, Bowen/t, Brewster, Burnett, Chantry, Dennis, Drayton, Easy, Eldridge, Ellis, Everat, Gadsby, Golling, Hedworth, Hinton, Hughes, Inkersole, Isaac, Jackson, Kirshaw, Lambe, Lewin, Lish, Lunn, Minchin, Minton, Parkinson, Perry, Pollard, Robinson, Robson, Sharp, Slator, Smart, Smith, Stone Gould, Toppin, Willerton

All mainly Lincolnshire, with Cambs, Herts, Leics, Notts, & Ireland

It will cost you £30 but you can apply to the MoD for his army records.

Was he "Dare Devil Gadsby, the Diving Wizard", of Skegness, mentioned in the Lincolnshire Echo of 25 August 1937?

He was in the Nottingham branch of the Grenadier Guards Association (on their Remembrance roll).  If they are contactable, they may know.  Otherwise it is a case of getting his records as ShaunJ advises.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

That would also fit the occupation of the other Gadsby with him in 1939 who OP wrongly says is also a Lorry Driver  ;D

Thank you all! There are two then, he didn’t have a brother named Leslie. That clears up the question of why he was in Skeg-Vegas - he wasn’t! Thanks again
